Hard Fall Race Update #3 and Pre-Race Briefing

Racer Guide Has Been UPDATED!

Below is a summary of the changes:

MOST IMPORTANT UPDATE: The race will now be finishing at noon on Sunday, with no change to the 9AM Saturday start time. That means you will now get up to 27hrs of amazing racing instead of the measly 24hrs we had originally planned. More for your money!

Gear List Updates: One throw bag per boat during the white water section will be mandatory gear.

Schedule clarification: As originally noted, maps will be released Saturday morning starting at 5:30AM. The clarification is they will be handed out AFTER teams have checked in and loaded their Bikes/Paddle bags/Gear Bins to the directed location. To avoid a delay for your team getting maps Saturday morning, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND your team use the Friday evening check-in and bike/paddle/gear bin drop between 5-8PM.

Course Update: There will be NO bikerafting. We know you all were looking forward to the puzzle of securely jerry-rigging your bikes onto the rafts so they don’t slip off into the water while paddling… sorry.

Logistics insights:

  1. Tent camping is not allowed at the start, but you can check out Molly Stark State Park as a nearby alternative.
  2. You will be carrying or wearing your PFD for at least half of the race. Make sure you have a method of securely attaching it to your pack.
  3. We are planning for a short swim at the end of the first leg. Make sure you have a dry bag for anything you don’t want soaked.
  4. You will see your gear bins roughly halfway through the race.
  5. Navigation – there will be one section that offers teams the opportunity to split (not required). Having 2 people that can read a map and navigate may save you some time.
  6. Be ready for elevation. The course will be hillier than most of this length.

Local Amenities: We’ve added info/suggestions for local groceries, last minute race items, and restaurants/quick eats.

Packraft Questions: Some people who are using our rafts have had questions:

  1. How much does a packraft weigh? A tandem comes in probably around 12 lbs. Many singles are around 8lbs.
  2. How small can a packraft be reduced to? I’ve put singles into 30L packs. Rolling a tandem long and skinny you could possibly squeeze it into some 30L packs like a Hyperlite if you left it sticking out the top, but it would take some effort.
  3. Do we need to deflate and inflate the packrafts during the race and is a battery operated pump provided for the packrafts or do we need to provide our own? Yes, the rafts will need to be inflated and deflated during the race. We provide inflation bags, but highly recommend to bring an electric inflator.

Virtual Pre Race Briefing: Last but certainly not least – We are planning to host a virtual pre-race briefing Thursday, August 8th at 8PM. Link to join will be sent a day or two before.
